4 Types of Scalp Psoriasis Treatment

Scalp Psoriasis Treatment

Initially, the biggest problem sufferers tend to have when trying to find effective scalp psoriasis treatment is the wealth of options available to them. Some of the most popular types of scalp psoriasis treatment include:-

Psoriasis Cream
Light Therapy
Coal Tar Shampoo
Medicated Shampoo
There are also a whole host of natural remedies for scalp psoriasis treatment available. Most of these are Vitamin D3 based and are a great supplement to any treatment regime.

1. Psoriasis Cream
Psoriasis cream is probably the most widely used scalp psoriasis treatment today.  These creams all have an active corticosteroid component which essentially has a direct effect on the immune system in the applied area.  Since psoriasis is in effect classified as an auto-immune disease, these treatments work very well.  You apply them on average two to three times per day and for the more potent creams, you cycle them in a two week on / two week off, treatment regime in order to minimize any thinning of the skin.

2. Scalp Psoriasis Light Therapy
For many scalp psoriasis sufferers, exposure to UVAUVB light can keep the symptoms completely under control. Research shows that it is one of the most effective treatments for psoriasis scalp.  Ever been sunning yourself on holiday and noticed how much better your psoriasis became Thats how psoriasis light therapy works.

Psoriasis light therapy, otherwise known as Photo-therapy uses ultraviolet light to slow down the rate at which the new skin cells grow. Two types of ultraviolet lights are used to treat psoriasis. They are ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB). UVA goes deeper into the skin and this treatment takes a maximum of 20 minutes in every treatment session. Sometimes UVA is used with some topical drugs for psoriasis for the treatment. UVB treatments are more effective than UVA.

The exposure time for UVB varies as it involves increasing the light wavelength onto a skin until the skin stops turning red. Once the skin stops turning red, time is increased and these scalp psoriasis treatments are provided on daily basis for a given period of time. UVB can be used alone, used with a number of tar products or used with anthralin that is applied on the skin to treat the skin conditions. Generally photo-therapy can be used with other drugs or just by itself. Severe psoriasis plaque is treated by using UVB alone.

3. Coal Tar Shampoo for Scalp Psoriasis Treatment
Coal tar shampoo is one of the oldest most tried and tested forms of scalp psoriasis treatment out there. Coal tar shampoo is applied like any other shampoo but generally left on for a specified amount of time until it is then rinsed out thoroughly.  This scalp psoriasis treatment tends to have a relatively strong odor and is considered a little messy, although the modern varieties are far better in this regard.

4. Medicated Shampoo for Scalp Psoriasis Treatment
This popular scalp psoriasis treatment works in a very similar way to the traditional coal tar based shampoo's but is considered less messy and is generally odor free. While as with all treatments for psoriasis scalp, it's effectiveness varies with the individual, it is certainly worth trying as many of us sufferers have had some fantastic success with these types of shampoo.
